# Chat with the agent

> Use Canvas context, private sessions, and clear output requests to direct the work.

Talk to the agent from a Canvas or a standalone chat. On a Canvas, select the cards you want it to focus on before you send.

## Where to start

| Entry point | Use it for |
| - | - |
| **Quick Chat** (`C`) | A conversation beside the source cards you're working with. |
| **Canvas session pane** | Longer work with a visible conversation history. |
| **Standalone chat** | A task started from Home or a Workspace without a Canvas. |

When available, [choose the agent](/product/agent/choosing-an-agent) before the first message. Connect an existing [ChatGPT or Claude subscription](/product/account/model-providers) to fund compatible turns through that account.

## Direct the work with selection

Selected cards are included as referenced context. A selected section includes its children.

* Select three emails and ask for the decisions in those threads.
* Select two proposals and ask for a comparison against named criteria.
* Select a document and ask for a specific revision.

The agent can inspect more of the Canvas and read accessible source files as needed. Selection gives it an explicit focus; it doesn't mean every file has already been read in full.

## Name the output

Ask for a note when you want a short result, a document for a report, or an [HTML block](/product/canvas/blocks) for a visual comparison or interactive explanation.

Canvas work appears as cards and edits on the surface, with progress and conversation in chat. In standalone chats, file outputs attach to the conversation.

For a sourced answer, ask the agent to cite the supporting material and distinguish facts from assumptions. Open those sources before relying on important claims.

## Continue and correct

Stay in the same session to refine an output. Select or name the artifact when several are in play, and describe the change you want.

If a task needs an action in another app, the available [Connectors](/product/connectors/overview) and [permission mode](/product/agent/permissions) determine what can run and when confirmation is required.

## Keep private and shared discussion distinct

Your conversations remain private. Collaborators see the shared Canvas and its artifacts. Use [Canvas comments](/product/collaboration/comments) for discussions your teammates should see.
