# Canvas basics

> Navigate a Canvas, select context, and use the editing and conversation tools.

A Canvas puts files, notes, connected records, and agent outputs on one surface that you can arrange and revisit.

## Move around

Pan with a trackpad scroll or by dragging with the right mouse button. Zoom with a trackpad pinch or `Cmd` + scroll on macOS (`Ctrl` + scroll on Windows).

Use the zoom controls to adjust the view. Undo and redo use `Cmd+Z` and `Cmd+Shift+Z` on macOS, or the corresponding `Ctrl` shortcuts.

## Select context

Click a card to select it, or drag on empty Canvas to select a group. Use `Cmd` or `Ctrl` while selecting to adjust a multiple selection.

Press `Escape` to leave a placement or interaction mode and clear selection. Before asking the agent to work on specific cards, check the selected context.

## Keyboard shortcuts

These shortcuts apply while you're working on the Canvas, outside a text field.

| `Q` | Add a comment, when enabled |
| `N` | Add a note |
| `D` | Add a document |
| `T` | Add a text label |
| `L` | Add a link |
| `U` | Upload a file |
| `S` | Draw a section |
| `P` | Open shapes |
| `W` | Open widgets |
| `E` | Toggle the Canvas explorer |
| `Enter` | Expand a selected HTML block |
| `Delete` or `Backspace` | Remove selected objects according to their type |
| `Escape` | Exit the active mode or clear selection |

Editing shortcuts require edit access. Viewers can use comments when enabled.

## Toolbar and menus

Use the toolbar to add notes, documents, sections, labels, shapes, and drawings. The insert menu includes files, links, widgets, Quick Chat, voice, and comments.

Right-click the Canvas for creation actions. Right-click a card for actions on that item, such as **Open**, **Rename**, **Wrap in section**, or **Share**. Available actions depend on the object and your access.

## Remove with care

Plain notes, shapes, and lines use **Delete**. File-backed cards can use **Archive**, while references use **Remove from canvas**. See [Archive and restore](/product/workspace/archive) for the difference.
