# Share a file

> Give someone access to one file without sharing its surrounding Canvas or Workspace.

Share a file directly when a teammate needs that file without access to the Canvas, chat, or Workspace around it.

## Share

    Open the file or right-click it in the rail, then choose **Share**.

    Add people, a group, or your organization.

    Use **Viewer** for reading or **Editor** for reading and editing supported documents.

## Direct and inherited access

A file may already be accessible through its Canvas or Workspace. Removing a direct file share doesn't revoke access someone has through that location.

Direct shares appear under **Shared with me**. A recipient can copy a shared file into their work; they can't move the original out of its owner's location.

Live file sharing uses members of the current organization. Publishing is a separate, public access choice.
