# Documents

> Create, edit, and restore documents written by you and the agent.

Documents are files you can write and revise inside Cohesive. Ask the agent for a report, proposal, or brief, or choose **New document** where you want it to live.

## Choose the format

| Format | Suitable for | Editing |
| - | - | - |
| **Markdown** | Notes, briefs, reports, and text with headings, lists, and tables | Edit text in the document editor. |
| **HTML** | Styled reports, presentations, and interactive visuals | Edit supported text regions or ask the agent to change structure and styling. |

An HTML file can appear as a block directly on the Canvas or as a document card. See [Canvas blocks](/product/canvas/blocks) for interacting with controls, editing text, and opening a larger view.

## Create and revise a document

    Add source files to a Canvas and select the ones you want used.

  <Step title="Name the output">
    Ask: *"Create an editable briefing from these files, with decisions, evidence, and open questions."*
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open and check it">
    Open the document, check the claims against the sources, and edit the wording.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Continue in the same session">
    Ask for a targeted revision, such as *"Shorten the introduction and add the unresolved risks."* Identify or select the document if the conversation includes several outputs.

Markdown documents support collaborative editing for people with edit access. HTML editing depends on the editable regions in the document; it isn't a general visual editor for every uploaded HTML file.

## Version history

Open **Version history** from the document's menu to inspect earlier content and restore a version.

A restored document still needs to be [published again](/product/files/publishing) if you want the public link to show that version.
