# Archive and restore

> Restore archived work and understand which removals can't be recovered from the Archive.

Use **Archive** to remove work from active views, then restore it from **Archived** when needed. Files can be restored for 14 days after archiving.

## Archive an item

Open the item's menu and choose **Archive**. The action is available for Workspaces, Canvases, chats, files, and Skills when you have permission.

Archiving a shared item affects the people who use it. Closing a tab or removing a live reference is a different action.

## Restore an item

    Open **Archive** from your account menu, or select the **Archive** tab in Settings.

    Filter by type: Canvases, Files, Chats, Skills, or Workspaces.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Restore it">
    Choose **Restore** on the item. Return to its location to continue working.

## Files and references

  Archived files are purged after 14 days. Restore a file within that window if you need to keep it.

Archiving an original file can make its live references unavailable until it's restored. Removing a reference alone leaves the original and its other references intact.

## Objects that use Delete

Notes, text labels, shapes, lines, drawings, and widgets are Canvas objects. **Delete** removes those objects rather than adding them to the Archive. Use `Cmd+Z` or `Ctrl+Z` to undo while the Canvas history is available.
