# Folders and organizing

> Keep Canvases and files together in one Workspace folder tree.

Folders organize files and Canvases together inside a Workspace. Use a folder for a project, account, or subject, then keep its Canvas beside the files it uses.

## Create a folder

    Expand a Workspace in the left rail. Right-click the Workspace or the folder where the new folder belongs.

    Choose **New folder** and enter a name.

  <Step title="Add work">
    Drag files or Canvases into the folder, or create them there from its menu. Use **Upload folder** to bring in a folder from your computer.

## Move and rename

Drag an item onto a folder to move it, or use **Move to** in its menu. Folder locations are shared structure: organizing a shared Workspace changes where teammates find its files and Canvases.

Chats aren't filed in the shared folder tree. Their conversations remain private.

## Folders and Canvas sections

A folder changes where an item is filed in the Workspace. A [section](/product/canvas/sections) groups cards on a Canvas. Use folders to find work later and sections to arrange the material you're working with now.

Moving a file's reference on a Canvas doesn't move its original in the Workspace. See [Files in Cohesive](/product/files/overview).
